“Where members have a grievance over issues such as plagiarism, with a publisher over a contractual issue, or a similar matter; and that grievance has not been resolved after the member has made reasonable endeavors, the member may approach the HWA Grievance Committee. The Committee will consider the facts and endeavor to assist the Member in getting a satisfactory resolution.”  - HWA Member Handbook


 Function                                                                

 HWA Grievance Committee is established to provide an avenue within the organization where members may freely and openly inform the association of events that may negatively affect the organization or its members. The Chairman of the Grievance Committee must appoint volunteers to act as committee members.  The committee must have a minimum of 5 volunteers including the chairman, but never exceed 9 members, including chairman. 

 The committee DOES NOT:

  • Make decisions regarding the morality of members.
  • Take sides on any issue.
  • Play favorites. 

 

Purpose

The purpose of the Grievance Committee is to help members resolve various complaints AFTER the member has utilized their own methods of resolution.  

The chairman will notify HWA leadership and Board of Directors of any negative trends found in grievances.


Steps of grievance committee upon receiving complaint:

  1. Ensure that complainant is a dues-paying member of the HWA.
  2. Ensure that complaint specifies type of grievance.
  3. Contact complainant within 72 hours.
  4. Contact defendant within 48 hours after receiving a completed grievance form from the complainant.
  5. Check complaint against the current bylaws of the association.

     We have two submission periods: 

  1. Through November 30, 2019 == For all works published between January 1, 2019 and November 30, 2019
  2. December 1 through December 31, 2019 == For all works published between December 1, 2019 and Dec. 31, 2019.

We do this to save our jurors from having too big an avalanche of works at the end of the year, so please submit early.    You are offering your own or someone else's work to be read by the Bram Stoker Award Jury. This does not guarantee that your work will make it to the ballot.  This will not get the work on the Recommended Reading List.   

Before you offer your work or someone else's for consideration, please read the Bram Stoker Award™ Etiquette Rules and the Eligibility Rules .

Please follow the guidelines carefully.
Word count minimum: 40,000 (submit shorter works in the appropriate other category)

You may upload either or both of the following per work offered:

SENDING A HARD COPY OF THE WORK?
Please consider that it is extremely difficult for us to disseminate a hard copy to all jurors and we strongly prefer digital copies. Sending a hard copy hurts your chances more than it helps. You should send a hard copy only as a last resort if no digital copy exists.

For hard copy submissions please write stokerchair@horror.org to get the mailing address. (The organization cannot absolutely guarantee delivery of the work.)

In a major advance for our website and the positioning of our members’ work we have just launched a Young Adult Horror section on our website, at  http://www.horror.org/yahorror/
 
It’s a bit sparse at the moment but we will begin to populate it shortly. To launch, we are fortunate to have the input of acclaimed comic strip writer and HWA member, Ray Billingsley as we look to use YA horror to improve uptake of reading, and of literacy generally. 
 
All YA material that appears on our ‘Dark Whispers’ blog will be duplicated on this YA section, so that librarians, parents, teachers and young adult readers can find our YA material in one easy place. 
 
We will shortly be adding last year’s Bram Stoker Award® nominees for Young Adult Novel and the winners of the Award for this category in previous years. There will be a selective addition of ‘iconic’ and notable YA works from past years at some point also.
 
You can assist us to populate the YA section by doing the following:
 
·         If you have a blog to write about YA and YA horror you can submit by following the guidelines at the bottom of this announcement
 
·         If you have a New Release YA book don’t forget to use the New Release form: http://www.horror.org/private/new-release-form.htm
Remember the audience here is not fellow HWA members – it is librarians, parents, teachers and most of all Young Adult readers.

If you’d like to submit an article to the HWA blog, follow these simple guidelines. We reserve the right to reject any submission for any reason. 

Only members (of any level) may submit directly. Non-members must send a query first. Email queries to yaeditor@horror.org.

We accept two types of submissions: non-fiction articles and recommendations. Articles can be about anything related to the horror genre, the horror industry, horror writing, or the HWA. Keep your audience in mind. If in doubt about whether your topic is appropriate or not, you can query at yaeditor@horror.org

If you are an HWA member, and you would like to write a book or story recommendation for the HWA blog, follow these simple guidelines. We reserve the right to reject any submission for any reason. We reserve the right to make edits.

Recommendations are shorter articles in which you recommend a book or short story you’ve read, explaining why you liked it and why you recommend it.

Recommendations are NOT critiques. We are not interested in what you think is wrong with a story or could use more work. We want to know why you enjoyed it. We will reject--either in part or in whole--negative statements about a particular work.

The material you're recommending does not need to have been written by an HWA member, but it does have to be related to the horror/dark fantasy/paranormal/supernatural genres, either fiction or non-fiction.

Again, these are not reviews, but recommendations. Tell us why you liked it.

The Horror Writers Association is proud to announce The Dark Poetry Scholarship to supplement its Mary Wollstonecraft Shelley and Horror Writers Association Scholarships.


The first Dark Poetry Scholarship was awarded in 2015. Thereafter, the scholarship will be given annually. The scholarship is designed to assist in the professional development of our members writing Horror and/or Dark Fantasy Poetry.

A sub-committee appointed by the HWA Board will choose the winner, who will be announced each year.

The Dark Poetry Scholarship is worth $1250, which may be spent on approved writing education over the two years following the granting of the scholarship.

The application for each Scholarship will be the same – a sub-Committee of the HWA Board will choose the winners, who will be announced each year.

The HWA and Mary Shelley Scholarships are each worth $2500, which may be spent on approved writing education over the two years following the granting of the scholarship.

Those who are interested in applying are advised to review the general rules before proceeding.

The HWA Scholarship is made by possible by monies received by HWA from the Authors Coalition.

The Horror Writers Association (HWA), the premier organization of writers and publishers of horror and dark fantasy and home of the iconic Bram Stoker Awards®, offers the Rocky Wood Memorial Scholarship Fund for Non-fiction Writing, an endowed fund providing grants for research and writing nonfiction relating to horror and dark fantasy literature. The Fund will provide grants annually. Membership in HWA is not a requirement.

Wood, the former President of the HWA, passed away in December of 2014 from complications with ALS, also known as Lou Gehrig’s Disease.

“Not only was Rocky one of the world’s leading authorities on the work of Stephen King,” said Lisa Morton, current HWA President, “but he was also much beloved for his tireless support of upcoming writers. We are delighted to be able to honor him by offering this scholarship in his name.”

“Rocky was extremely dedicated to the HWA,” said Board of Trustees Chairperson Marge Simon. “It is fitting that a new generation of horror writers will be supported through a grant bearing his name.”

The Rocky Wood Memorial Scholarship Fund for Non-fiction Writing (the “Wood Scholarship”) is established by the authority of the Horror Writers Association Board with the generous support of individual donors.

HWA President Rocky Wood explained the intent of The Mary Wollstonecraft Shelley Scholarship, “It is very clear to the HWA that there are unseen, but real, barriers limiting the amount of horror fiction being published by women. There are many fine women writers being published in our genre but we also see potential for the percentage of horror fiction being published by women to increase. This Scholarship, named after the great female horror writer, aims to encourage more female writers to enter our genre and to aid in the development of those already working within it. At the same time the HWA exists to extend the horror genre in all its aspects, so we are also establishing Horror Writers Association Scholarship, which is open to all our members, regardless of gender.”

The application for each Scholarship will be the same – a sub-Committee of the HWA Board will choose the winners.
Each Scholarship is worth $2500, which may be spent on approved writing education over the two years following the granting of the scholarship (see the Rules at www.horror.org/scholarships for more detail).

“These are the largest, and possibly the only, Scholarships offered in the horror genre. HWA hopes to supplement these scholarships with smaller grants as funds allow,” Wood said.
